RZ’s Halloween (2007)
In a decade that will be remembered for its plethora of horror remakes (‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’, ‘Friday the 13th’, ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’, ‘The Last House on the Left’ to name just a few) ‘Halloween’ would be no exception. Rob Zombie’s 2007 ‘Halloween’ was what the director himself classified as a reimagining (rather than remake) of John Carpenters 1978 classic.
Rob Zombie’s ‘Halloween’ takes the audience back to where the mayhem all started, a perspective that until now had never been explored during the previous eight films in the series, Michael’s childhood.
Living in an extremely dysfunctional, lower class, white trash family Michael doesn’t take long to progress from the torturing of animals to the cold blooded, emotionless murder of people within his life. From the school bully to his drunken, verbally abusive step father – no one is safe, the final victim in his childhood murdering spree, his older and seemingly innocent sister Judith! Michael’s mother returns from her shift at the local strip club to the blood bath and carnage created by ten year old Michael.
Institutionalized at the Smiths Grove Sanitarium, it is clear during sessions with Dr. Sam Loomis that Michael is beyond rehabilitation, beyond any kind of help, rather waiting for his opportunity to kill again! Such an opportunity comes when due to the irresponsible negligence of Sanitarium staff Michael makes his escape.
From here on in the storyline pretty much follows that of the original 1978 classic, Michael returns to Haddonfield to start wreaking havoc only this time he is well aware that Laurie Strode is his sister and she is well within his sites. The movie concludes with one hell of a confrontation that leaves the audience guessing … is Michael dead?
